Love can bewitch you when you least expect it. Its intoxicating aroma wraps tightly around your senses. If you’re like Michelle LeBlanc, you do the entrancing and beckon the love to you. That’s the case, at least, in her brand new “Hot and Heavy” music video, premiering today, which gives new meaning to witchy potions. With Nashville’s 1767 Designs as the bohemian backdrop, the singer-songwriter concocts a love-soaked elixir with a red wine base. “I actually did a lot of research about different love spells and potions, but I didn’t really find anything that resonated with me,” she tells B-Sides & Badlands. “So, I decided to create my own.”

Candles smolder around her, and the song throbs in easy waves, scenting the atmosphere with ripe romanticism. “I actually thought it out all the way through. I did intend it to be a real spell and so it was. I started with smudging the space to clear the energy,” she explains. “I used wine as the base… because of course. The wine was actually called Prophecy. I added an apple seed to ‘plant the seed’ of love; turmeric root to let it grow roots; honey to make it sweet; cinnamon to add a little spice; and then, I sprinkled gold flakes for prosperity.”

Rather unwittingly, the spell then took root and blossomed. “It actually did work! But let me just say… be careful what you wish for,” she adds with a wink. The music video was directed by Nick Bastoky, a Nashville videographer and photography, and exhibits a stunningly dark sensuality. It’s a séance doused in lush wine.

The song, which features an original demo of a more pop tilt, was co-written with Jim Logrando and Sean Spollen. The video takes the built-in slinkiness and cranks it up to 11. “I was definitely a little nervous about the whole ‘sexy’ thing,” LeBlanc admits. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to translate, and I really didn’t want to look like an idiot. But I did get looser and more relaxed as we kept shooting. I’m sure the bottle of wine that I drank in the process helped!”

“Hot and Heavy” is lifted from LeBlanc’s recently-released debut EP, A Man Like You.
