Premiere: The Slow Drag feels every single ‘Beat of My Heart’
The East Nashville player celebrates a thrilling, budding romance with his new single.
A crush is tangy blue-raspberry cotton candy on the boardwalk. It’s flushed, rosy cheeks after a stolen kiss on the ferris wheel with the silvering moon hanging like an orb overhead. It’s the exhilarating tranquility of a sunset rippling across the waves, foamy at the beach’s sandy edge. It’s feeling the rush of innocence in someone else’s tender embrace and letting their heartbeat pound your eardrums and quake through your body. Out of East Nashville, The Slow Drag (real name Austin Williams) feels such sensations with his chest-banging new single “Beat of My Heart,” which sees the young upstart tip-toeing between glassy-eyed pop and clashing rock chords. His stylistic flourishes pummel the senses like a midsummer’s thunderstorm, complete with golfball-sized hail.
“I see your face, I hear your voice / And I feel the beat of my heart / I start to move, I have no choice / I feel the beat of my heart,” Williams wiggles in a ball of yarn, tying up the loose ends of his emotions in thick, woolen, rainbow-cut strings. “Something about you pulling me closer / Face to face, skin on skin / I never want this to be over.” Through a translucent lens of buoyant, highly-flammable pop, the singer-songwriter learns to embrace the unknown and writhe in the seductive thrill of sun-kissed romance.
“This song celebrates innocent crushes and the natural urges which fuel attraction. When two people find themselves in sync, it’s a beautiful thing,” he tells B-Sides & Badlands, premiering the song today. “The lyrics tell the listener that simply the sight of them gets the blood flowing and the body moving.” Williams, who calls upon such influences as Matt Nathanson and Green Day, clinging to reckless abandonment and sinking head-first into uninhibited adventure, submerges himself completely in a vat of bubble-gum and soaks in the sticky sweetness before basking in the velvety afterglow.
“I am a fairly visceral person ⏤ easily infatuated, wildly flirtatious and always eager to explore a crush,” he says, letting the curtain slip down a bit further. “I love how this song captures the moment when you realize you’re in front of someone who gets your motor running and makes you want to shake your stuff.”
“Beat of My Heart” is the first link in a long chain of singles expected this year.
