The mating rituals of wild animals aren’t really that far removed from the bizarre and practically-primal behaviors of human beings. Have you ever been to a bar on Friday night at last call? Nashville-rooted funk-pop group Marquee Mayfield, anchored with lead vocalist Andrew Glass and sometimes containing upwards of 10 other players, mocks today’s culture through plotting a hilariously-on-point safari-style trek through suburban America. “Feelin’ So Blue” sees Glass playing a Steve Irwin-like role, introducing the broadcast in conservationist attire and donning a thick Australian accent. “I hope you love me the way I love you,” he sings, grooving in front of a makeshift green screen.

The visual, premiering today, takes an unexpectedly ravenous turn ⎯⎯ we won’t spoil anything, but you might not want to eat during this showcase. “I wanted to do something completely unique and different than I’d done before for this video, Glass tells B-Sides & Badlands about the clip, which serves as a satiating taste-test of where the band is likely going next in their grand musical expeditions. “Most of all, I wanted it to be bright, colorful and have a storyline or theme. I also wanted it to be funny and clever. We’ve done the ‘party video’ a couple times now for other singles. Those are always fun, but I felt like something else was really needed here. I also didn’t want to do a video that only focused on me or the band…or just something else that’s been overdone, like everyone walking down the street in a trendy, hipster neighborhood.”

As you’ll witness, “Feelin’ So Blue” exudes a great stretch of dynamic fashion statements, from Glass’ tan shirt and rugged bandana to a potential suitor’s flirtatious, extravagant, rainbow-colored feather boas. “I also wanted it to have some weirdness to it. It definitely achieved that with the animal courtship and mating rituals, acted out by humans. The praying mantis scene gets me every time,” he says. The concept came from the crew over at Nashville’s Solar Cabin and confirms the mocu-mentary style approach to great effect. “The irony is that sometimes as humans we act just like these animals to attract a potential mate.”

“Feelin’ So Blue” officially hits all digital retailers tomorrow.
