Taste Test: AERI goes back to her roots with ‘Agave’
Indie pop artist makes a firey impression
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
As demonstrated with her previous single “What If”, AERI is the master of the quiet yet powerful. Her new single “Agave” follows a similar, if more intense pattern. “You can’t tame me/there’s nothing for you until I’ve got enough of myself” she declares softly. Accompanied with a warmly resonant bass, “Agave” weaves lines of acoustic and synth instruments twist around each other, to create a perfect tapestry of old and new. The music video that accompanies it similarly mixes modern and traditional, with a reimagining of Korean shamanistic and Confucian traditions. In this way, AERI honours her roots as a Korean descendent, whilst also leaving her own signature mark. “Agave” is a declaration of heritage, power, and a warning never to underestimate her.
