Taste Test: Alicia Blue honors Lauren Ruth Ward with new song, ‘Queen of Echo Park’

The singer-songwriter celebrates a good friend and musician on a new track.

Art is a conduit. It’s a cathartic release. It’s excavating deep, visceral darkness and holding it up to the world. Singer-songwriter Alicia Blue sought to upend usual conventions of her own work, and that’s how “Queen of Echo Park” was born. Between pitter-patter trickles and rainbow shards of light, she allows herself to feel the joy that’s as much a part of her being as the rest of it – acoustic guitar creaking in a gurgling rhythm. “I shout the good news from my breast / Like some East Side angel evangelist,” she sings. She situates the elation, simmering to the top, nearly exploding, as some horn declaration best served from the mountain tops. In honoring her good friend and fellow musician Lauren Ruth Ward, she not only illustrates support but unearths hope we all could use right now. Backing vocals burst as a gospel choir is likely to do, and the jubilation is inescapable.
