Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Anthony Da Costa is a hopeless romantic. Films like Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink dancing as sugar plums in his head, the indie-pop singer-songwriter wrote his song “Runaway” as the backdrop to Molly Ringwald’s various dalliances with love. “I refuse to run away,” Da Costa coasts on the melody, sticky sweet and dripping with vulnerability. It is in stark, perhaps jarring, contrast to his real life tendencies, often closed off from such commitment or committing too much. A necessary balance has never stuck, and even as he might grapple with his emotional currency, in song, he hits upon a heart-rending note that’ll make you fall to your knees.

“Runaway” samples Da Costa’s new album, Feet on the Dashboard, out everywhere this Friday (March 27).
