Change comes in waves. And it always signals shedding past habits, relationships, and vicious circles, and trading up for fresh ideas, new adventures, and a clean slate. Americana singer-songwriter Arlo McKinley comes to terms with his own transitions and discards various faults, mistakes, and toxic relationships into the dust. “Walking Shoes” twinkles with his irresistibly sandpaper lead vocal, tightly bound musicianship, and a message of evolution. “So, I’m putting on my walking shoes / Goodbye, wish you the best / Grudges that I fell upon / I’ve been holding for too long / Tomorrow they will all be gone once the morning comes,” he vows to the listener as much as himself. His commitment to change is urgent, leaking onto the recording, and you feel every wound heal up by the end.
“Walking Shoes” anchors McKinley’s new album, Die Midwestern, out everywhere August 14.
