Flood waters eventually dry out. The storm clouds will roll away as swiftly and severely as they came, leaving a crystal blue to reinvigorate the mind, body and spirit. There’s even a striking poeticism to be acquired in enduring a valley of darkness. Nearly drowning himself, East London soul-pop upstart ARLO knows better than to cast aside his ambitions and heart for what may only last a solitary day. He seeks out the silver lining with his new single “Rivers,” heavy on synth and rhythm, and while his past certainly did enough damage, lingering in trace amounts, a bright new day has dawned. “Rivers dry up in the end,” he sings on the final stanza, a haunting frame that’ll provoke you over the threshold, as well. And just like that, his anguish melts away in the shine and sparkle of his own declarations of freedom.
“Rivers” is ARLO’s second single of the year, coming on the heels of the Mick Jenkins-starring “Changing.”
