Taste Test: Ashe sets herself free with new song, ‘Not How It’s Supposed to Go’
Pop’s new treasure reflects on a past marriage and its toxicity on a stunning new piano song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Toxicity in a relationship is like an old, creaky 100-year-old oak’s roots. They’re so twisted into the earth’s crust that it becomes almost normal. You can’t feel that your suffocated while you’re in the muck of it. It’s only afterward, the air filling your lungs, that you can see clearly. Pop’s greatest new treasure Ashe wades up to her neck in reflection, the waters of the past gurgling and splashing around her. Her brooding number “Not How It’s Supposed to Go” witnesses the songwriter navigating the truth that was always there before her eyes. “Break the drywall with your fists / I’ll tell myself that this is normal / Just a bandage on my hand…” she sings, barely getting the words out between a cascade of tears. It’s an abuse survivor’s rally, a cry that splits the heavens right in two. Ashe is free for the very first time.
“Not How It’s Supposed to Go” is lifted from Ashe’s new EP, Moral of the Story: Chapter 2, out now.
