Negativity is a disease. And you must wield a shiny new spade to uproot such soured knots of destruction. The roots are buried deep, but the simple action of self-absolution is a crucial part of growing up. New Zealand synth-pop duo BEACH BLUE ⏤ of Rodney Fisher and Nik Brinkman ⏤ curl their fingers into the dirt, intently swapping out metallic and cold garden tools for a direct, more intimate reconnection to the past. With “Break My Bones,” accompanied with a grainy, VHS-style visual, starring Brinkman’s nephew, the craftsmen question the beauty in discarding toxic peoples, things and places. Skin-piercing blues, reds, purples and greens splash onto the camera, and the images are then spliced with concert footage from Wellington’s Club 121 to further elevate the urgency of being ever-present in the moment. “Help me understand / What it means to be a better man,” the lyrics come in delicate static waves, vocals washing in and out of focus before fading out into the stark moonlight.

“Break My Bones” is out now.
