Taste Test: Beach Bunny resents ‘Ms. California’
The indie-rock/power-pop band struggle with wanting someone who’s already taken.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
We’ve all wanted someone we couldn’t have. The longing, the distress, the bitterness that seems to cloud our minds – it all comes to a head, crashing against our need to be happy. Threading all parts of being human, indie-rock band Beach Bunny find “it hard to fight the feeling,” as lead singer Lili Trifilio confides. “Ms. California” is sun-bleached and forlorn, hopeful and downcast, spitting fire and cast in ice. “I wanted to write a song that captured the frustrating and feelings of jealousy and bitterness,” she said of the song. The accompanying visual, directed by Matt Gehl, bathes in the slowly-boiling resentment that seeps into the mundane, as the band members try to go about their lives. Trifilio seeks out the ocean’s lush refreshment and treads into its depths to wash it all away again. “I need to let go of everything,” she sings. “It’s getting hard to fight the feeling….!”
“Ms. California” is the second single to the band’s debut album, Honeymoon, out everywhere February 14, 2020.
