Anger and hate of the world drags you kicking and screaming. You never quite know how to not succumb to such torment, and we’re all wading deep waters, and probably drowning or worse. Singer-songwriter Ben Mitchell clutches a life preserver closer to his chest ⏤ his guitar that is, a conduit for thought and conversation ⏤ on his new song. “How to Whisper a Shout” situates a dialogue with his kids, turning over meanings of complicity and action in his hands, and the offering is surprisingly hopeful. “Where are we headed next?” he asks, more of a question to himself than the world. “Seems like there’s nowhere left / What will I say to them / When they say, ‘Dad, tell me again / Why is war allowed?'” His questions may not have tangible answers right now, but challenging the system is a first step.
