Premiere: Beth Macari strips back empowerment song, ‘I Am’
The UK singer goes acoustic with a version of her latest song.
All we really have in this life is ourselves, and we can’t possibly spend precious minutes with regret. “As time goes by, I doubt myself / Wondering all the things I might regret / If I had the chance, what would I do again?,” songbird Beth Macari sharpens her talons. She combats an inner struggle, confronting the demons that seek to drag her asunder, and eventually comes to realize that anything and everything she’s ever desired is inside of her. “I am all I need,” she crows. With a new acoustic rending of her song “I Am,” premiering today, the UK-based singer-songwriter brings renewed focus and emotional urgency ⏤ even more, she musters up a soul-stirring vocal performance.
“I used to think that I could do anything, almost anything / I did believe that I could be anyone I wanted,” she reflects back on her journey so far. An acoustic guitar in tow, Macari gains a new perspective, that of her mother, who instructed her at a very young age that as a woman, she could conquer the world if she wanted. “I am everything I want,” she vows. Her words are stern yet plush and plump. The melody soon ascends right up through the clouds, and she calls upon a gospel intonation to give her the boost and wings she needed.
“I Am,” off an EP called I Am Everything, expected later this year, beckons the listener to rediscover their own self-worth, too. It’s almost baptismal in its relinquishing of the past and its pain. All sales of the original version of the song will be donated to If U Care Share, a mental health and suicide awareness initiative.
On the song, Macari writes to B-Sides & Badlands, “[This] is song about embracing yourself and learning to love who you are. The acoustic version was so enjoyable to record, as it really gives that raw and exposed vocal, which tells the story with even more meaning: there’s nowhere for my voice or the lyrics to hide.”
Macari is also expected to release a short film, a culmination of five music videos stitched together ⏤ also called I Am Everything.
