Resilience takes time. You must plow through the thorny brush of life in order to feel renewed power blossom in your chest. Singer-songwriter Brooke Stephenson, of The Voice fame, took the long way home to get to such a fruitful place with her new song. “Backbone” exhibits boot-strappin’ determination to climb out of her own darkness, finding an unwavering support system, and learning to also in turn be a support beam for others. “I’ll hold you up, be your backbone,” she promises. Fiddle and guitar lather in circles around her angelic, but strong, vocal that seems to ache with ripened wisdom and pain. She’s done more than her fair share of healing, and now, she’s capable of bestowing that upon others.
“Backbone” samples Stephenson’s forthcoming debut EP, tentatively expected later this year.
