Premiere: Bruce Sudano feels love’s magic again with, ‘Keep Doin’ What You’re Doin”
The Americana titan feels new love deliver a special kind of magic.
Magic seems to be lost when we grow up. Or perhaps, it’s our perception of it that fades like blooms in autumn wind. If we let it, it can plant new roots in our lives. And sometimes, magic pounces when you least expect it. Wham! It thumps right into your lap. Blues-Americana man Bruce Sudano feels the rush to his skin, a rose-fueled adrenaline shooting up to his cheeks and a thrill he had long forgotten. With “Keep Doin’ What You’re Doin’,” premiering today, a fresh kind of lovesickness blossoms all around his feet, and he bathes in its sweet aroma.
“I’m feeling like a baby boy in a playpen of delight / A happy, little kid having the time of his life,” he confides. A sticky groove trembles alongside acoustic guitar, an earthiness arising in time with Sudano’s stalky tenor. “A world away from reality and that’s just fine with me.”
The accompanying visual is a furry, psychedelic acid trip starring a cat, a goldfish, a Springmaster Electro-Vibro-Chair 3000, and a spacecraft excursion through space. It’s all animation, of course, courtesy of Elliot Mason, but it’s darling, delightful, and mind-melting. The images float, distort, and bend ⏤ configuring the unbridled euphoria of burgeoning romance. “I never would have dreamed that I could feel this way / A miracle in the making / I’m believing it more each day,” coos Sudano, known for penning hits for Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, and Dolly Parton.
In writing the song, the singer-songwriter specifically channeled Bill Withers in tone and style, allowing his vocals to slither and slide in place. “Rhythmic, acoustic-guitar driven with a sultry lyrical overtone, it tells the story of a new relationship and the early morning magic that is being spun much to the surprise of the main character,” he tells B-Sides & Badlands over email. “The thing is, I guess, at a certain point in life, you don’t expect there to be magic anymore. You’ve lived, you’ve loved, you’ve lost and then boom, there it is, someone sets your soul on fire.”
“Keep Doin’ What You’re Doin'” samples Sudanos’ forthcoming new record, Spirals, Vol. 2, Time And The Space in Between, expected everywhere October 23.
