Taste Test: Burning Pictures stay up til ‘5AM’
The Santa Cruz band reflect on life until the wee hours of the morning on a new song and video.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
The light strains through the creamy window slats. Eyes red, hair disheveled, your mind is flooded with chaotic feelings that ricocheting off one another like craggy meteors hurling through space. It’s that kind of night. Folk-rock band out of Santa Cruz, Burning Pictures ⏤ of Joe Kaplow, Bobcat Rob Armenti, Michael Whalen and Elliott Kay ⏤ reconfigure their emotional epiphanies into a song draped around existential questions on life’s fleeting, arbitrary nature. “Would you believe that tomorrow is really gonna come?” proposes Kaplow, whose reedy voice gets right to the point. It’s languid but piercing, gloomy but hopeful, relaxed but perched on the edge. Even as dread seems to soak their bones, they just laugh, still boozy from the night before and cheers to a new day dawning outside their doors. And who could blame them? We all know life is tragic. Might as well embrace it!
“5AM” serves as the band’s first proper release under the new moniker.
