Talking openly and honestly about mental health has long been one of taboo. But in the last five years or so, the walls circling those who suffer and the outside world have begun to crumble. The advent of social media has become a conduit through which we, as a culture, can speak truths with far less fear of recourse or further damage. English folk conductor Callum Pitt has scrawled a lovingly sincere letter to a friend in the form of his new song “Here If You Need,” which is painted with transparent urgency amidst a jingly arrangement. “It’s not a sign of weakness if you turn and ask for help,” he sings, wedging his reedy tenor between the evocative layers. The production slowly, thoughtfully crescendoes in time with the emotional release, hinging on horns and various models of percussion to mirror his friend’s inward journey. Pitt’s performance illustrates the kind of empathy and skill largely absent in today’s decaying world, and we should all now be at full attention.
“Here If You Need” is lifted from Pitt’s debut EP, Poisoned Reveries, out later this year.
