Taste Test: Carl Street is just ‘Bunking the Midnight Train’
The bluesy travelin’ man offers up a conversation on mental health.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Mental health is at the forefront of many conversations these days. Stigma still follows, but we, as a society, are far more open to discussing it than we used to be. Possessing a deep-throated snarl, musician, singer, and songwriter Carl Street cracks open his skull to expose an anxiety-riddled mind, and he doesn’t apologize for it. “Bunking the Midnight Train” is deceptively upbeat, like a classic travelin’ tune, but through such a tinny gallop, he seeks to manage his mental health and find a support system to push him onward. “I seen many a face / And I see ’em many a times / Yours is the first one on my mind,” he yelps on the hook. Street’s eclecticism permits him to bust through the ceiling – he cavorts from blues to honky-tonk to indie-rock and back again – and while his sly influences are wide-ranging, there is something immediate and familiar (yet completely fresh) about his approach.
“Bunking the Midnight Train” is the title song to his debut solo record, out everywhere January 31.
