Weathered and worn relationships spin their tires until the rubber is baked in mud. You’re always this close to cutting the chords, but that unbridled passion pulls you back in. It’s an irresistible pleasure that somehow surpasses what is healthy and right. Nashville electro-pop operative Caroline Kole stumbles back and forth, considering each option with loose care, on her new song “Always Almost.” One moment, she’s wholly woke, and the next, she falls back into old habits circling her brain like a painter at an easel. “Didn’t say happy birthday ‘til it hit 7:30 at night / Then you take me to dinner / Give me flowers you got someone else to buy,” she sings, laying out all the details as best she can. “Still, wake up in love, I piss you off somehow / It’s not quite enough / Too soon to call it / But too hard to run ‘cause it always almost, always too close,” she wrestles with the wild display of emotions pulsing in sharp pangs in her chest. It might be dangerous and against better judgements, but for now, she’ll embrace both.
“Always Almost” is lifted from Kole’s new EP, Only Slightly Emotional, out everywhere now.
