Taste Test: Cattle & Cane writhe in darkness on new song, ‘I Wish I Knew Jesus (Like You Do)’
The folk-rock duo confront the dangerous parts of themselves on a new song.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
We’re all stained and tormented with our own demons. When we realize exactly how damaged we are, perhaps wreaking havoc everywhere we go, there’s a new kind of moral code that emerges. Melting together indie-pop and folk-rock, UK duo Cattle & Cane light their former selves on fire with their new song, and it’s propulsive and slinky and dangerously oily. “I Wish I Knew Jesus (Like You Do)” discards what’s left of the remains, shells of who they once could be tossed into the flames. In sacrificing it all, they send up a warning to everyone they encounter; it’s an admirable attempt to course correct, but sin follows you as a ghost. “I don’t expect you to care ’bout where I’ve been,” sings Joe Hammill. They then bury their bones in the earth’s soiled crust and ride off into the descending harvest moon. Tomorrow might bring the relief they desperately seek.
“I Wish I Knew Jesus (Like You Do)” is the second single from the duo’s upcoming album, Navigator, expected everywhere November 8.
