Taste Test: Charlotte Cornfield flies back into the past with ‘Silver Civic’
The Toronto folk tunesmith finds herself entranced with the past on a new ballad.

You could be walking down the street, living your life in post-recovery of heartbreak, and a scent or image can stop you in your tracks. Feeling her spirit fading out of her body in such a catatonic state, Toronto’s consummate folk singer and storyteller Charlotte Cornfield folds the brittle decay of emotional triggers into her new song. “Silver Civic” is her emblem of a time gone by, a time riddled through with heartache, and as a nondescript silver civic zips past, her mind is frozen in place as it replays every single moment of a past lover. With stunning piano work from Leif Vollebekk, the song baked with a visceral charge, Cornfield lets every ounce of trouble drip from her voice. “Today, I thought of you / It doesn’t happen often,” she sings before the flood gates of memory open and she nearly drowns. The performance is muted, and therein lies undeniable and alarming strength.
“Silver Civic” anchors Cornfield’s upcoming album, The Shape of Your Name, out later this spring.
