Premiere: Chris Stylez exposes the truth in ‘Living a Lie’ video
The R&B singer doesn’t mince his words, that’s for sure.
Truth is like medicine. You have to take your dose sooner or later. The bitter taste lingers on your tongue, a third-degree burn as a reminder of your mistakes. “We’re out of patience / We’re out of truth / I guess you’re never going to change,” R&B arrival Chris Stylez applies with critical force with “Living a Lie,” an easy-cooked ballad brimming with both regret and acceptance. “Take a good look at yourself ’cause there’s no where to hide,” he later barbs, curling his lips in resignation but knowing all too well who is really to blame here.
In the accompanying music video, premiering today, Stylez trots through the midnight streets and passes by several white-masked individuals, physical manifestations of the song’s durable intent. “Probably one of the most important songs I written thus far, ‘Living A Lie’ was a time when I chose to bare what was weighing on my heart, in truth,” he shares with B-Sides & Badlands. “I really felt as if the person who inspired it was at a loss for losing me. Life should be about following your path, and I respect that. I get it ⎯⎯ but, sometimes, we miss our marks and find ourselves living a lie.”
Within the last third of the visual, sprinkled with blood-red complexions, mirroring that of infidelity and devastation, his lover’s mask is lifted, and her face reads in horror. “Take a bow / See, you finally got what you wanted,” Stylez croons, walking a tightrope of command and vulnerability. The song clocks in at just over two minutes, but its measurable density idles over the heart.
“Living a Lie” is the latest in a string of singles the past year, coming on the heels of a viral moment in 2016. Piano-based track “Who Is” earned a flurry of 50 million loops on Vine and entered Spotify’s viral charts in more than 16 countries. It was the beginning of a rebellion and has since been upheld with his well-plotted R&B catalog.
Stylez is expected to drop his new album, In Late, Out Very Early, April 20. The record sees the singer-songwriter exploring his reggae, R&B and soul roots in bold, sex-positive narratives.
