Even given an ongoing pandemic, you can still throw a ghoulish (and safely solo) Halloween party. No one’s stopping you. Just ask Clifford, a lo-fi pop artist whose tribute to everyone’s favorite hockey-masked slasher Jason Voorhees is enough to get your head rollin’. With “Party Like It’s Halloween,” the singer-songwriter slides his voice under your fingernails with a tribute fitting for not only Friday the 13th but classic horror-pop we’ve come to adore through the decades. “Ki ki, ma ma Jason Voorhees / Creatures like these make me uneased / Please, oh please, leave me at peace,” he howls into a funnel of web-laced synths and wolfish barks. The accompanying visual, shot on an iPhone 8 plus, dishes up all the grainy and delightfully low budget charm of any throwback ’80s slasher. Clifford lays the sinister grins on thick, so much so you’re likely to be hypnotized.
