Taste Test: Common Jack makes peace with his life on new song, ‘I Don’t Mind’

The indie-folk storyteller casts the past aside for a more serene state of mind.

Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Life is a willow tree whose branches blow to and fro as they will. We can’t control it, and we may not even want to. Whether it’s the gentle breeze of a warm spring day or a ravaging mid-summer downpour, it all becomes ingrained within our story. Indie-folk singer-songwriter and blog mainstay Common Jack (John Gardner) learns to accept life as it is with his new song called “I Don’t Mind.” On a blanket of acoustics and little else, he discards his previous notions for a more serene state of mind. “I sold my guitar to buy myself some time / But I don’t mind,” he sings. “No one knows my name / And I barely got a dime / But I don’t mind.” He absolves himself of the matters, the tension leaving his body and dissipating as the new year peers over the edge. He’s made peace, no longer “on the run,” and it’s the kind of resolution into which we could all buy.
