Boombox Blitz: Confetti struggle to balance adulthood & innocence in ‘When I Grow Up’
The pop duo explore adulthood and holding on to child-like innocence.
Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.
Adulthood just sorta happens to you. You really have no say in the matter. From 18 to 21 to 25 to 30, “time is fucking scary, man,” saucy pop duo Confetti deliver in their classically shameless way. Their sophomore single is “When I Grow Up,” an addicting temptation about what it means to come of age in today’s world. Both 20-something millennials, Fox and Weber try to find peace of mind through an elastic jam, shredded through the club and attempting to push the conversation forward. “I thought I would have it all figured out by now,” they exhale on the final line, a bit exasperated, nearly defeated.
But it’s their brazen sense of humor that lightens the mood. The first stanza makes their intentions quite clear. “I wish I was ambitious, can’t stand the heat, so I get up out the kitchen / Can’t even do the dishes, wish I had some luck, wish I wasn’t superstitious / Did I mention…I’m addicted, addicted to attention / I get sad when I don’t get a lot of mentions / I got two ears but I hear they don’t listen / Got 99 problems but still no bitches (damn!),” the two performers spout, a grin coiling around their lips. Through addressing a heavy, haunting issue for this generation in such a cheeky way, they not only frame the seriousness in an accessible way but they smooth the edges a bit, taking the sting out of truth.
“There’s a lot of pressure to get a job, find a soulmate, start a family and present yourself as a stable and responsible adult. As creatives, part of our job is to forget as much of that as possible and write with the feeling of innocence we had as children,” the duo explain. “When I Grow Up” is a blustery, sun-baked adventure, pounding with drums and saturated with daring. They add, of their musical collaboration, in general, “We decided for this project to let our cynical sense of humor shine light on issues we face everyday in society. From people sucking to the feeling of never wanting to grow up, the list of topics is truly endless. We feel as though this is our duty to get people actually thinking about the music they are listening to instead of just feeling it.”
For the song’s official video, an animated short created by Ricci Ferigo, they create a completely awkward but adorably endearing elephant character. Dressed up in a suit, he struggles to balance what it means to be an adult with what society dictates, as well as trying to hold on to what makes him so special. The visual centers on his longing to be loved and to fall in love, as he makes his way through the scruffy day-to-day. Ultimately, the song and video is a much-needed reminder that we can still have child-like wander even as we get older. It’s OK to be young forever. We promise.
