Meredith Brooks was on to something with her 1997 hit “Bitch” ⏤ “I’m a sinner, I’m a saint / I do not feel ashamed,” she preaches atop classically-sunny guitar chords. She tussles the complexities of her womanhood and very public image with a delightfully ferocious attack. Pop luminary Cuja brandishes a similar headspace of strength with her new song “Maneater,” in which she retools her sexual energy to clap back at detractors shamming her. “You say you want to ride with the Devil / Well, brush that chip on your shoulder,” she sings, taking back the reigns of her own burgeoning profile. Of mixed heritage, Cuja (whose moniker is drawn from her Filipino family name Cudiamat) offers up a timely and potent piece of pop music, as she seeks to trade in the fluffy for an irresistible message of brawn. “I’m the only one on your mind,” she chirps into the gooey production swirls.
