Taste Test: Dan Bern is certainly ‘Not Perfect’
The folk-rock legend owns up to all his flaws on a new song.

We have to swallow the bad with the good. The sooner we accept our fate, the better. There’s freedom in shouldering even our most disappointing flaws. Folk-rocker Dan Bern sculpts such an exploration around painting and the craft of writing a song, also drawing a parallel to the tug of love on his heart. “Not Perfect” is complete with harmonica rumble and sees him owning up to his humble state. “Well, I wanted just to write a little melody for you / Wait until you hear the bridge / You’re gonna like it too / It’s not perfect, but nothing to do is,” he sings. Later, he carves out a place of romance with his wife, only to let her know that he’s not quite the perfect man she thought him to be. There’s a reason Bern has managed such a prolific career (now in its 22nd year and over 10 studio albums), and “Not Perfect” is yet another treasure of a performance.
“Not Perfect” is the second single from Bern’s new album, Regent Street, out everywhere later this year.
