Taste Test: Dan Ferguson peels back his own ‘Disguise’
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
One’s sense of self ebbs and flows just like the tides. One day, it immerses you totally with foamy, pastel green waves; other days, it’s so low, the sands are exposed to the sun and littered with seashell fragments and other wayward particles. Indie-folk tunesmith Dan Ferguson buries his voice into such a thematic embankment, unearthing his own relentlessly fluid understanding of himself. “Disguise” flecks off its outer layers and creaks along like all the classic folk songs do. “Dark images swim around my mind / Under surfaces I can’t reach / Can we find ourselves by peeling back the layers / Is there anything underneath,” he sings, sifting through the coastline to find who he’s meant to become.
