2020 has wrought feelings of anxiety and isolation. Written when separated from a loved one, folk singer-songwriter Davis John Patton‘s “I’m Not an Island When I’m Alone” feels eerie yet celestial. Church bells and organ swell and envelope the listener, as Patton yearns for human connection once again, but he’s not succumbing to the blow. Instead, he recalls one’s words that carry even more vitality thatn he could have predicted, so much so that he regains flight anew. “As I stumble through Seatle, the moonlight by my side / You’re sleeping, soft as shadows / But I hear you through the night,” he sings. His words seep into the skin, offering up a cool soothing quality. It may just be enough to assuage any angst, at least for a moment.
“I’m Not an Island When I’m Alone” samples Patton’s forthcoming EP, poetry, out everywhere October 2.
