Taste Test: Dayla draws ‘Closer’ for a divine embrace
The synth-pop upstart makes a splashy impression with her debut entry.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Decades before black mirrors upended the very notion of intimacy, humans have often struggled with allowing another body float into their orbit. The very transformation of opening up can be terrifying, but with peeling back the layers, you dig deeper into unlocking mysteries of life (or, at the very least, really living and feeling things). A sparrow flickering over a cushion of synth-pop, Dayla mounts a flight directly into a pink-hued sphere of romance, permitting her guards to wash away as the coastline sands. “This feeling inside, it runs so strong,” the Londoner sings in a sticky mixture of piano and lavishly supple synths. Her voice often melts across the production, and as her mighty debut single, she makes an indentation you won’t soon forget. “I’m letting myself go,” she coos in just the right amount, a statement that vanishes without souring.
