Taste Test: Donovan Woods opts for light instead of pain on new song, ‘Grew Apart’
The singer-songwriter decides to let the pain go with a bedrock of strings.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
It’s too easy to stay bitter after a breakup. It’s much harder to refocus your energy and let the past go. Plucky acoustic guitar prances beneath a lamplight of swelling strings, and Donovan Woods bemoans a relationship’s end and eyes a brighter, more self-assured future. With “Grew Apart,” he opts not for wallowing in a broken heart ⏤ despite recounting specific, raw details ⏤ but rather the power he has since obtained. “She’s better off / And so am I,” he convinces himself. The misery might still throb like a marching band gearing up for the season, but he squelches it with his raspy, warm vocal cords.
