Premiere: Druv Kent longs to be ‘Back Home’ again in new video
The singer-songwriter tries to find who he was meant to be in his new video.
The phrase “home is where the heart is” is said to be attributed to Pliny the Elder, a Roman author who wrote the encyclopedic Naturalis Historia. While the phrase’s origins are suspect, with direct references littered throughout much of literature and pre-modern culture, the sentiment bares one of the most basic of human desires ⏤ to feel comfortable and at peace. Centuries later, we are still wrestling with that idea and attempting to accept the very definition of “home.” Singer-songwriter Druv Kent seeks to affirm his own relationship to himself and the world around him with “Back Home,” a rhythmically-volatile slice of pop music that marries the alternative with the polished.
“We walk around so loud / Up and proud, we’re plenty / But down inside, there is a space so wide and empty,” sings Kent, who situates his unease right at the center of the storm raging within his body. Bright and dynamic, the accompanying music video, premiering today, weaves through the streets of Kent’s hometown of Kolkata, India, employing a lush color palette and a soaring cinematic filter made even more brilliant with the cityscape whizzing by. Puneet Rakheja sits in the director’s chair, culling his experiences in short film and advertising projects, and injects “Back Home” with a sense of universality and earthiness. Three characters are seen in the sequence, and the viewer follows their trail in a yellow cab as they come to terms with their own journey, floating like vessels in the thick atmosphere and the sun’s sharp rays.
“I want to go all the way back home,” Kent sings on the chorus. His voice is rich but unfussy, commanding but effortless, rich but clear. It’s a rallying cry for all of us, and the enthralling visuals piece together a story that’s eerily familiar and rattles the nerves. The journey to complete enlightenment entrances us and propels our being further into the cosmos, even when we’re absolutely terrified about what’s to come next.
“Back Home” is the latest taste of Kent’s forthcoming debut album. Having worked corporate job until five years ago, then picking up his pen to write his first song, Kent has a knack for addictive melodies. To-date, he has mounted a series of one-off singles, testing the waters and dipping his toes in the deep end of the (music) pool, and Kent is ready for what superstardom has in store.

Fabulous article, nuanced, reflective! Two small fact-check points. 1. Lyrically, its not “replanting” but “we’re plenty”. And 2. The song is written abd composed by Druv Kent, the video is directed by Puneet Rakheja. Many thanks for the fine work!
