Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones

Crushes come and go. What remains are lessons to be learned and reapplied. Funk-pop heartbreaker Dylan Rockoff draws upon is youth, a wide-eyed boy who fell hard and fast for a girl with fickle infatuations. On his song “Bad Haircut,” he rides the beat as he’s known to do and cranks the hip-hop whip for one of the year’s most addicting breakdowns. “Flip-flops, white socks / Sat down, barber shop / Hair line, got riggety rocked / Mom says, I look handsome,” he spits off his icy bars, buoyant and charming. “It was over soon as I got a bad haircut,” he sings. In the accompanying video, grainy and very much through a Saved by the Bell filter, he keeps the stage pieces sparse, transitioning in and out of various simple sets, and the focus undeniably rests on his debonair onscreen presence.

“Bad Haircut” samples Rockoff’s new album, Semicolon & Parentheses, out January 17, 2020 – all preorder proceeds to benefit Locks of Love.
