Boombox Blitz: Eden Warsaw paint a beautifully tragic ‘Pink California’

The electronic band dig into the mind (and the music) after an unexpected breakup.

Welcome to Boombox Blitz, an artist spotlight series showcasing overlooked singers, songwriters and musicians who are quietly taking over the world.

Everyone has a different way of self-medicating when your heart is ripped apart. Some spiral out of control, their emotions gripping tighter on their souls and crushing any possibility of recovery, and others turn to various throat-choking vices to numb the pain. Still others bask in the glow of songwriting to heal, wrapping lyrics and melodies like gauze around their swollen and aching wounds. Mark David chose the latter. Frontman of electronic band Eden Warsaw, he employs thumping, gritty, mind-altering synths and the bond of friendship to temper the pain. “Stop running away / I can handle this,” he confronts, the dark stabs hitting against thick walls of rubbery sound.

Along with Phanat Chan (lead guitar), Kyle Densmore (drums) and Troy Donaldson (bass, synth), the foursome illustrate the astonishing effects of human intimacy and the power of music itself. The accompanying visual is littered with penetrating pinks and purples, almost symbolizing the intoxicating glow that reverberates from the speakers, bouncing frantically off the brick and mortar framework. “I wanted to explore how Mark and the band write their music and how it bonds them together,” says director Patrick Hodgson. “Mark has a falling out with his girl, and the loft – bathed in pink light – becomes their writing sanctuary, their happy place, their California. All of the frustrations of life and relationships channel into their music, which begs us to consider the power and effect music has on us.”

“Pink California” ignites the band’s brand new EP, Calm the Coast, a visceral navigation of fragmented humanity and decorated with icy waves of dark-pop production work and percussion. “Somebody Tell Me” harkens to early ’00s soft-rock, giving into the calming burn of “Nova” and the sun-stripped cinema of “Boulevard.”
