Rae lets the listener witness the sheer greatness of an original song demo.

Magic can sometimes be captured on a record like trapping a firefly in a jar. Such is the case with much of Americana starlet Erin Rae‘s work. On the one-year anniversary of her Putting on Airs record, a magnificently troubled examination of mental health and sexuality, she has released a series of demos. With the original “Putting on Airs,” which feels both lush and languid, Rae pins her vocal to the wall for the whole world to see. It goes down as smooth as anything else she’s done, but in its purest form, there is even more power and grit floating between the notes. She’s extracted the melody from the heavens above and descends on chords of guitar and piano, the drum kit bobbing behind her. It’s a truly stunning moment in time.
The four-song Putting on Airs demo release is out everywhere now.
