The pop newcomer calls out fake online culture.

“I wanna see you feeling weak,” aches Essy. Online culture can be the pits, zapping you of energy before you even wake up in the morning. We swipe through our phones, hoping for connection, and end up emptier than when we started. “Cry for Me” arrives as Essy’s plea for authenticity, as she begs a potential new lover to be vulnerable with her. Elastic synths spring up in colorful arrays around here, even a saxophone gets in on the action. “I don’t need you blinding my light / Oh, but baby I’m just here for the ride,” she sings, flexing hard. It’s a universal declaration, seemingly futile as we all are forced to play this game, day-in and day-out, yet there’s no harm in calling it out.
