Seasons of life are as ever-fading fall leaves, left to the mercy of waning daylight and impending winter. They come and go, predictable transitions that carry with them new beginnings, but you can often feel the temperature drop moments before the chill skitters onto your skin. Oregon-based Americana four-piece Evan Thomas Way & the Phasers wax bittersweet on their own transformations in life, from leaving sunny Los Angeles behind to stepping into a new frontier. “Long Distance,” working the melancholy into overdrive, upends the emotions with searing blisters of guitar and a slow-cooked guitar line, frontman Evan Thomas Way just letting the melody be. “I guess time will tell / My friends all wish me well / I’m ready to begin / But I’m running from something,” he sings, not as a heart-tugged weeper but just as a statement of fact. Change is here whether he’s really ready for it or not. Might as well settle in for the bumpy ride ahead.

“Long Distance” is the titular cut to Way’s new album, out May 3.
