Taste Test: Family Jools sparkle in the ‘California Sun’
The UK indie-rock band reflect upon life’s transitions and lost friendship on a new song.

We’re all really just a bunch of drifters. We wander in and out of each others’ lives with no real sense of purpose or direction. That’s how orbits work. Gasoline-drenched UK four-piece Family Jools take that concept and roll it into a swarthy, sun-bleached anthem of transition. “California Sun” deceives the senses; the guitars are warm and fleecy to the touch, soothing somehow. Yet the lyrics have such an emotional chomp to them, you’re knocked off balance, if even for a fleeting moment. “You’re my California sunshine / Lookin’ for that good time / Where did I go wrong,” they probe for questions of a friend whose journey took them far and away over the horizon. They’ve lost touch, clearly, but the spirit of what they represent is as palpable now as then.
