Taste Test: Flagship Romance pen gutting story song called ‘Julie Wants to Go to War’
The folk-pop duo write a poignant ballad in defiance of the transgender military ban.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstone
An administration hellbent on hate enacted one of the most gross abuses earlier this year. The transgender military ban is just the latest in a string of acts that seeks to dismantle democracy and, more importantly, humanity itself. Picking up their pen in defiance, folk-pop duo Flagship Romance have written a poignant ballad called “Julie Wants to Go to War,” in which they unfold a story of one transgender soldier who wants the right to fight for their country like anyone else. Shawn Fisher and Jordyn Jackson wrap their hands together and head into battle as much-needed allies in this truly horrific moment in history. They lace up the narrative with great nuance and tenderness, allowing the character on display to take on a vibrant urgency. “They were fighting for freedom and the right to choose til the day they read the news,” Fisher and Jackson sing, the empathy pouring forth from their beings. It’s a stunningly gut-wrenching song, reflecting back a reality that doesn’t even feel real these days.
