Taste Test: Flawes scroll through negative social media ‘Highlights’
The pop-rock band navigate a sea of toxicity on social media.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
Social media is rarely positive these days. At least, it certainly feels that way. Scrolling through feeds and snapshots of someone else’s life is an agonizing spiral down to the bottom. It’s dark and suffocating without a way out. Pop rock three-piece Flawes – of Josh Carruthers (vocals, keys), Freddie Edwards (guitar), and Josh Hussey (drums) – scroll through their mental rolodex and flick through negative commentary and its heavy toll on their lives. “I’m just hiding here in plain sight / Scrolling through your highlights / Nothings real but no one needs to know / Trying to do what feels right living out my best life,” laments Carruthers. His cries fall upon electric guitar slaps that foam and froth around him. “This toxic road won’t lead you home whatever way you go from here,” he sends up a flare of the melancholic inevitabilities.
“Highlights” is the backbone of the band’s debut album, out everywhere now.
