Taste Test: Fly by Midnight got us all ‘Waking Up’
The synth-pop staples head down to the tropics for a delicious new summer jam.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
After a jarring, erratic season of terrible winter chills cutting through the early flakes of summer, Mother Nature has course corrected, and the sweltering heat has finally settled. There’s almost a cathartic energy that pulses in the air these days as the cold’s firm grip feels like months ago now. Tapping into such atomic fuel, synth-pop duo and B-Sides & Badlands staples Fly by Midnight plant paradise right in our eardrums. On “Waking Up,” a deliciously tropical rendezvous, sticky with their trusty swagger, Justin Bryte and Justin Slaven arrest every one of the senses with a tasty slice of coconut. It’s a sensually-charged embrace that’ll make you swoon late into the evening, down a few more drinks and wait for the moon to glistening off the ocean. “I’m waking up, no deja vu / Where there’s no one else like you,” slips from their lips in a hushed whisper. And you’re lost forever to the beat of their very own drum.
