Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.
The music industry might as well throw in the towel right this second. The Highwomen‘s “Cocktail and a Song” easily delivers one of the most gutting lyrics of the year. “The day is close, it won’t be long / Couple of cocktails and a song / And don’t you let me see you cry / Don’t you go grieving / Not before I’m gone,” sings Amanda Shires, whose voice penetrates the simplicity of a piano-base with such potency it’ll knock you to your knees. With bandmates Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and Brandi Carlile on harmony, spinning the emotion even tighter, the song focuses the lens on grief in a devastating way. It’s a timeless performance that anchors the band’s self-titled debut LP, out today.
So-Cal rockers Wallows alight on the shimmering magic of the silver screen with “Just Like a Movie,” the trio burying their voices in caked-on guitars and the throes of midnight bliss. “Everybody’s wasted, throwing away their lives / It’s all the same ’cause no one ever tries,” member Braeden Lemasters peels back the layers as flecked paint. “Through all the sounds that we’re laying on the ground / Don’t ever care and the rest is hidden now.” The urgency swells hot and thick in the production, an almost romantically existential gleam peeping through the layers. Originally as record-store-day only release, “Movie” continues to thread together a burgeoning songbook that further underscores their remarkable talents.
Our new playlist also includes such names as Laurin Hunter, Kelsea Ballerini, Lyman Ellerman, Del Barber, Dan Bern, Hayden Everett, Kyle Emerson, The Ghost Wolves, HOLYCHILD, Wrabel and many others.
In all, we’ve got 30 new tracks to power your weekend ahead. Get to listening!
