This Year’s Gonna Hurt. That’s the name for synth/pop band Lost Stars‘ new EP. And boy, they hit the nail on the head. Of course, the seven songs are immersed in their personal lives, as they spin smooth crystalline yarns about love and loss. “Can’t Pretend” ignites the record, a first inward-rooted plaintive piece before erupting with a moon-bound destination. “No, I can’t pretend to love you,” admits frontman Damian Malnar. The rings hang around his eyes, the emotional deterioration has obviously taken its toll, but he seeks the synth-y sheets for respite. A glorious moment!
Cam is a classic kind of singer. If you’ve ever heard her take of Patsy Cline’s “Sweet Dreams (of You),” you know Cam’s got her own power and nuance of her very own. With her new single, appropriately called “Classic,” she continues forging her own path, wonderfully tight-knight, smartly written pop-country. It serves as another appetizer to her long-awaited second album, The Otherside, set to drop October 30. She can do no wrong, and the fact gatekeepers refuse to play her music is infuriating. But no mind, they need her far more than she needs them. Her work proves it.
