Welcome to Freshly Squeezed, a weekly new music playlist: spanning country, pop, EDM and urban, mainstream and other.
We don’t deserve Betty Who. If we’re talking truly underrated pop performers, she’s right at the top of the list. I saw her play Webster Hall last summer before they shut their doors for the last time, and her show was electric, engaging and welcoming. The crowd hung on her every word, flipping along to her catalog of should-be global hits. Earlier this year, it was revealed she had parted ways with her former label, RCA Records, and she would be issuing music on her own terms. Today, she drops a labor of love with a new EP titled Betty, Pt. 1, and as we officially enter our second year since conception, it makes complete sense to kick off a new playlist with standout cut “Just Thought You Should Know.” It’s as gloriously ’80s as we’ve come to expect from Who’s delicious, irresistible blend of electro-pop, dispatched with filtered finger-snaps, glistening synths and a classically smooth vocal. What more could we want?! Just shut your mouth and listen, guysss.
Cody Jinks offers up a booze-soaked new bar-stomper called “Must Be the Whiskey,” brimming with a misery-laden lyric and a gripping, atmospheric melody. It’s the first taste of his forthcoming new album, Lifers, expected later this summer and serves as a rather appetite-satisfying entry in his songbook. Then, folk-pop duo Oh Jeremiah step out into the “Blue Light,” while rocker Welles issues his debut album today, sampling with a fuzzy, lo-fi ode to “Rock n Roll” in true rockstar fashion, flittering with swagger and enough electric guitar to smack you between the eyes. Under-appreciated starlet Sarah Darling waxes poetic with rough-cut but shimmering “Diamonds,” and Steve Moakler, armed with a new album, called Born Ready, muses on what it means to turn “Thirty” and carry a cross of adulthood responsibilities.
The new Freshly Squeezed lineup is overflowing today with new songs from Loote, Just Loud, Jason Charles Miller, Alessia Cara, Cosmo’s Midnight, Jackie Greene, People Folk, Roscoe & Etta, Christina Aguilera, Johny Dar, Whethan, Moriah Domby, Eighty Ninety, El Mar, Kodaline, Lost Lakes, Death in Vegas, Buddy Guy, FINNEAS, Muncie Girls, Ella’s Brother, Ruel, Oldermost, Dirty Heads, BROADHURST, All Time Low, Cigarettes After Sex, DNCE, Cory Stewart, Troye Sivan, Kelly Clarkson and countless more.
In all, we’ve got 51 new songs, from gut-punching ballads and swirling, saloon charmers to stadium-stamped anthems and sun-coated road trip songs.
Each playlist will be refreshed every Friday morning/afternoon. We reserve the right to update anytime during the week, so make sure you bookmark this page.
