“Wasn’t this year all a fucking bummer,” sings Gabe Lopez. It’s less a question (because hello, this year sucked) and more a pointed statement. With his new single “End of the Lost Summer,” the rising pop purveyor waxes bittersweet about a summer that just wasn’t anything at all. Masks and a bozo in office is the terrible hand we were dealt, and that’ll be the memories seared most on our brains. “Maybe you don’t see the big scene / Go back to watching TV / All the year has been a hot mess / Hands up if you’re depressed yet,” he later remarks, helicopters and marching chants soon fall into the mix. It’ll make you cry and dance all your pain away in a wash of sunset synths and Lopez’s imposing performance.
