Taste Test: Gigi Rowe can’t make any ‘Promises’
The electro-pop goddess revisits the past whether she wants to or not.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones
We all have that one ex-lover whose presence or even just a mention envelopes us again with the familiar. It’s not necessarily that we desperately miss them; we were used to their company, for better or worse. Caramelized in ’80s synths, electro-pop time traveler Gigi Rowe exposes her heart once more to an ex, and the flood gates bust down to reveal a tidal wave she might not be able to overcome. On new song “Promises,” a foamy wash of classic pop sweeps over her, and she’s immediately taken back to the days when love was innocent and before its inevitable collapse. “I don’t want to make promises, promises that I’ll never keep,” she reminds herself more than anything. The groove is searing and bopable, and you may get swept away, too.
