Taste Test: Glenn Thomas asks a little ‘Oriole’ all of life’s unanswered questions
The singer-songwriter crawls out of insomnia by asking profound questions.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
In the throes of insomnia, a state of being not unlike agonizing purgatory, singer-songwriter Glenn Thomas is haunted by the weird hour between darkness and sunrise. The earth and its many creatures seem to come to life during that uncertain timeframe, so Thomas turns his attention to the choir of birds whose fluttering chirps are soothing and profound. With his song “Oriole,” he asks all life’s questions that have kept him up all this time. “Little oriole, stay here with me,” he begs. “Tell ourselves that we’ll outlast everything.” His existential crisis is baked into the song’s warm, crusty surface, buried beneath harmonica, acoustic guitar, and a rumbling, folk-rock rhythm. “I guess, it is what it is,” he leaves the listener questioning their own answers.
“Oriole” samples Thomas’ new album, Reassure Me There’s a Window, out everywhere May 15.
