Gold burned in their eyes as they wove down along Highway 49, which acted as a conduit to unforetold riches of the earth and freedom from the chains of poverty. Immigrants sought after a better life ⏤ and times certainly haven’t changed much ⏤ and they were and are willing to take unimaginable risks if it means a sliver of hope might be tossed their way. Dusty Americana duo Goldschatz stage an adventure of great insight and charm with “North 49,” an aptly-titled sojourn across the landscape that seeks to swallow its lone navigator whole. “Trust the Lord to save my soul,” Christina Rieder and Timothy Jaromir tip-toe across a tightrope, their voices scraping together and offering up a performance both high-flying and low-hanging. It snaps and breaks and splinters, as with each syllable they inch closer into a cavernous craggy hall of the unknown. The Gold Rush evokes overwhelming wanderlust, and the duo roll the dice on their very lives.
“North 49” is another appetite-whetting entry to their forthcoming album, Salt of the Sea, expected later this year.
