Sooner or later, we’re all just a headline buried beneath a deluge of sociopolitical turmoil and rage-tweeting leadership. The black and white letters don’t matter in the end. Sunny folk-rock band Grand Canyon confront their own qualms of the truth and self-doubt of not only their place in the world but as working musicians trying to have a voice. The darkness is swallowing, yet they raise their fists in triumph on a song called “Yesterday’s News.” Bubbly and steam-rolling, the song also digs up feelings of a burned-out relationship, while playfully examining the inevitability of it all. “I don’t want to be buried / In the fine print on the back of page two / I’m sick and tired of losing / Time after time,” howls frontman Casey Shea. Amy Wilcox’s angelic, but still pummeling, vocal comes up to meet his for a ferocious anthem for every underdog.
“Yesterday’s News” serves as the title track to a new EP, out August 2.
