Taste Test: Grand Commander offers soothing lullaby with ‘Calm Down’
The indie-folk songwriter delivers a song we all need right now.
Welcome to Taste Test, a song/video review series of SubmitHub-only gemstones.
We need music more than ever right now. Folk singer-songwriter Sam Damask, known professionally as Grand Commander, nearly lulls the listener into a restful slumber with his new song “Calm Down.” It’s melodic melatonin, his voice smooth as maple syrup. “What we really need to do today… calm down,” his breath is heavy, yet silky and soothing. Damask’s voice wraps you like a new fleece blanket, as a roaring fire crackles in your ears and the snow drift grows outside. In the accompanying visual, he wanders through his life, from taking the subway train to trudging the streets, and his nearly ASMR-bent vocal performance washes over you. It’s absolutely mesmerizing.
